Phillies Lose Again while Franco is still Sitting on the Bench

Phillies lose again last night to the Colorado Rockies 7-2 and have officially lost their 7th series in a row. The Rockies have won the first 3 games of the 4 game series, out scoring the Phillies by a margin of 23-5. Yes that is correct the Phillies have been out scored by 18 runs in a 3 game stretch… They are down right awful to watch right now.

Jeremy Hellickson lasted only 5 innings, giving up 8 hits and 7 earned runs while walking 4 batters and only striking out 2. His ERA has jumped from 1.80 at the end of April to a 4.28. The Rockies scored all 7 runs in the 3rd inning, coming from a Carlos Gonzalez 3 run homer and a Charlie Blackmon, still killing the Phillies, 2 RBI single. The Phillies tallied 3 total hits on the evening. As I wrote about yesterday, the Rockies starter last night, Tyler Chatwood came into the game losing 4 of his last 5 starts and had a 5.40 ERA in the month of May. All he did was pitch 7 shutout innings giving up 1 hit while striking out 8. The Phillies lone 2 runs were scored on a Michael Saunders to run homer in the 8th inning when the game was already over but what the hell here is the highlight anyway.

As I was watching the game I was reading an article by Stephen Gross, from The Morning Call, about the Maikel Franco benching situation and how it’s a game of chicken between manager and player. The fact that Pete is sitting our 24 year old 3rd Baseman, the little hope we have with this team, a second game in a row because Franco did not come into his office and ask him why he wasn’t playing. Are you kidding me Pete? I know Franco has had a down year but he just had an 8 game hitting streak going into this series so maybe starting to find his swing and you bench him 2 straight games. Franco even said he doesn’t plan on talking to Pete:

“I’m not that kind of guy, I’m just trying to stay mentally ready, and if I see the lineup and I’m playing, I’ll go to play. If I’m not, I just try to get relaxed, enjoy the day, and do everything I can do.”

The most shocking tweet that I saw yesterday and retweeted was from CSN’s Corey Seidman.

There is absolutely no additional words needed after reading that.

The worst part about last night’s game is I only had access to the Rockies broadcast team while watching the game. After Carlos Gonzalez 3 run homer in the 3rd, the announcer said that Cargo’s swing is better then Ken Griffey Jr.’s swing. I am sorry but how on earth can you compare Carlos Gonzalez to “The Kid.” Arguably, Griffey had one of the greatest swings in baseball history, so therefore this announcer now believes Carlos Gonzalez may have the greatest swing we have ever seen.

Also, they had a trivia question for the night:

I love Rocky but how can you compare the Rocky Statue to Independence Hall when asking about the most ICONIC Philadelphia attraction. Independence Hall is only just the place where are country adopted the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution, no big deal or anything.

The Phillies and Rockies conclude the 4 game series this afternoon at 1:05pm. The Phillies will turn to Vincent Velasquez (2-4) to try and salvage a game. While the Rockies will send 27 year old left-hander Tyler Anderson (3-4) to the mound trying to complete the 4 game sweep.
