Today in Philly Sports – May 19th, 1974 – Philadelphia Flyers Win their 1st Stanley Cup

43 years ago today, the Philadelphia Flyers became the first NHL Expansion team to ever win the Stanley Cup. The Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 4 games to 2, they won the clinching game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals 1-0 behind Bernie Parent 30 save shutout. Bernie Parent won the Conn Smythe Trophy with a 12-5 record in the playoffs and a 2.02 goals against average.

The Flyers brought their secret weapon to the ice before game 6 having Kate Smith sing God Bless America.
