Today in Philly Sports – May 26th, 2011 – Wilson Valdez Accomplishes a Feat that hadn’t been done since Babe Ruth in 1921

6 years ago, Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 5 to 4 in a 19 inning affair. The game actually started on May 25th but lasted 6 hours and 11 minutes, it ended around 1:20am on May 26th, 2011. Wilson Valdez started at 2nd base for the Phillies and was batting in the 8th position when the game started. He went 3 for 6 at the plate with a double and a walk. However, his most memorable moment of the night is when he was called in to be a relief pitcher in the top of the 19th inning. Valdez started the inning getting Joey Votto to fly out to center, then he hit Scott Rollen, but finished the inning getting Jay Bruce and Carlos Fisher to fly and pop out respectively. The Phillies went on to win the game in the bottom of the 19th on a Raul Ibanez bases loaded Sac Fly.

Wilson Valdez final line was 1 inning pitch, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, and 1 win. Valdez became the first position players since Babe Ruth in 1921 to start a game as a position player and end up getting the victory as a pitcher.
